Our feature show this Spring is a Rock and Roll Revival. Kids sing our favorites from when we were kids, backed by a professional band. We'll be holding auditions on January 23 and 24 from 4-6pm. Auditions are open to anyone. Rehearsals will be 2-3 times per week. We'll work with the performers to accommodate your schedule, but most group rehearsals will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 5-6pm. Shows held May 14, 15, and 16th. For beginning improvisers, Improv 101 is laugh-out-loud fun. Learn the basics of Improvisational Theatre: working together, building on ideas, listening to each other and saying Yes. Kids in this class will learn as they play and perform with seasoned improvisers. Try favorites like the Prop Game, I Object, Elevator, Freeze Tag, Blind Dubbing, Choose Your Own Adventure, and more! Encourage cooperative play, learn to think on your feet, improve confidence, make up stories with friends and have fun acting them out.
Each week we'll have a new challenge and a new chapter that we'll build using our creativity and Imagination Playground Blue Blocks. These giant blocks are light but also sturdy. They connect together to build everything from creatures, to caves, to castles; which is great because we'll build mansions, trains, wardrobes, bridges, forts, majestic thrones, and more in our story this spring: C.S. Lewis' "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe!"
Improv 201 is for more experienced improvisers (who have completed at least one semester of Improvisational Theatre training with Impulse City.) This class will build on the skills of Improv 101 with more time devoted to story-building, character creating and collaborating as a group. Participants in this class will be invited to perform during the weekly Improv Show at Impulse City. Play Freeze Tag, World's Worst, Genre-O-Rama, Beads on a String, The Prop Game, God vs the Devil, and more! Improvisation is great fun and it encourages cooperation, critical thinking, adjusting to changing information, collaborating with others, and strengthening confidence.
Based on great stories, we will build new worlds using the Imagination Playground (also known as the Big Blue Blocks!) We'll pretend to be talking animals, insects, professors and anything else we can dream up! Our feature book this spring is Charlotte's Web so we'll play characters from Fern's barnyard while building executive function skills. Don't miss out on this treasure of a class where playtime and imagination are center stage and anything is possible!
Start training your body for any kind of physical activity. Dance helps you organize your movements and builds coordination for everything from soccer skills to gymnastics. With a foundation of ballet and yoga, we'll explore all kinds of dance styles from modern, jazz, hip hop and ballroom to create original dance pieces.
Learn the basics of painting including Underpainting, Blocking In, Building up texture, dry brushing, Sgraffito, Glazing and more! We'll paint everything from Animals to Vehicles to Landscapes while we practice and improve our brush techniques. Enjoy this fun creative class with friends and let your inner artist shine!
What kind of airplane will you make? The Arrow, the Stealth, the winged Bat? Color, Cut, and fold paper into flying works of art. Part of the magic of airplanes is learning the physics behind how they work. We'll talk about aerodynamics and forces such as drag, gravity, thrust, and lift. We've got new templates and styles of planes for each week. At the end of the term we'll have an air show, where we feature our favorite planes and gliders!
Sculpt, shape, weave, and construct with us as we explore the vast and exciting world of 3-D artwork. Learn the techniques behind the mediums as we create with everything from clay to cardboard! Survey different styles and methods while making your own unique works of art!
Back away from the desks and dittos and step outside into nature! We'll open our eyes and ears as we explore and identify the flora and fauna of our Hyattsville Campus. Learn to identify trees, plants, insects, and animals. We'll play games that require big imagination. We'll pretend to be in the rain forest, the desert, the mountains, the beach, lakes and ponds, grasslands, swamps and bogs and more! Don't miss this fun and engaging class that promotes learning, exploration, and appreciation of the many biomes and habitats that make up our world!
Learn the building blocks of representational drawing! Together we will break down intimidating artistic subjects for young artists of all skill levels. We'll cover the basics of figure drawing, the essentials of still-life drawing, and the foundations of composition.
Explore movement in two dimensions. This class will bridge the physical world with the representational world of visual art. How do you leap with paint? What turns and spins can you make with pencils, sponges, and pastels. Find inspiration in master works of art and beautiful music. This class is one part dance and movement, one part visual art and one part creative thinking.
Design and execute your own take on our invention challenge! Together we will work to bring your designs to life by examining how simple machines work and how ideas become reality. From board games to marble roller coasters to Rube Goldberg Machines, watch your inventions come to life!
Would you like to learn to knit, cross-stitch or make bracelets? This class will teach you the basics of knitting and purling, embroidery and knotting. If you like to work with yarn, string or ribbon, this is the class for you. Nimble fingers and personal patience are required for this class.
Design and draw your own comics. Tell your own story! We will combine storytelling and visual art into one-page comics that we'll make each week! Learn how to make action come to life on the page as we develop our drawing skills. Learn how to tell a cohesive and engaging story. We'll create characters, build plots, and develop emotional arcs. Improve both your artistic and writing skills while spending time with friends.
Relax and express yourself! Each week will explore different themes. Take your pick of coloring page as we try out various mediums and techniques such as crosshatching with colored pencils, color layering with watercolors, and etching with crayons!
Get those legs moving after a long day sitting in school. Physical activity builds muscles and improves coordination. We'll play soccer, kickball, hacky sack, and kick the can. We'll play passing games, target practice games, and kick bowling. We'll practice kicking up into the air, through hoops, tunnels, and more!
What can be better than playing football with your friends? This is two hand touch -- not tackle football. Practice blocking, passing, receiving, and kicking. Create winning plays and strategize with your team. Football is fun, improves hand-eye coordination, and helps kids learn to work together as part of a team.
Join us outside for Hide & Seek, Sardines, Tag, Frisbee, Four Square, Soccer, and other running games. Take some time away from the video games and screens to run around on our 5 acres. These games require critical thinking, team building, decision making, and physical fitness. We learn how to win, lose, and have good sportsmanship while having lots and lots of fun!
Get outside in the sun and play Field Hockey! Learn strategies and technical skills to win the game. Join your friends for a team sport that is becoming more popular every year. Using a stick to move the ball around improves awareness, coordination and confidence. Practice gliding and sliding the ball, pass it to a friend and score!
Each week we explore yoga and mindfulness through a fun story! We'll learn new poses and routines while promoting health, flexibility, and core strength. The body, thoughts and feelings are inherently linked. Practicing yoga helps to promote friendship, openness, and concentration. Let's take a trip to the moon, pretend to be pirates, let's have an underwater adventure and perfect poses such as proud warrior and sun salutations.
Want to play a Wizard or an Elf? Take on a den of Dragons with your friends, find hidden treasure and save the princess from the evil Sorcerer. Build characters, learn spells, collect armor and magical items. Practice spells like fairy fire, gain experience, and level up fighting monsters! Dungeons and Dragons allows kids to immerse themselves in an imaginative world where they help create the story.
Dribble, Pass, Shoot -- Learn to think on your feet. Work together as a team. Play horse, practice layups, scrimmage, and more! We focus on awareness, visual spatial perception, and quick thinking/acting to help kids improve the simultaneous use of their hands and eyes.
This centuries old game provides a substantial aerobic and strength-building workout, as players run up and down the field to get the lacrosse ball into the goal. We'll practice passing, cradling, shooting, and more! Lacrosse promotes agility, grace, teamwork, and finesse. Join us for one of America's fastest growing sports and a world of fun!
Hand-eye coordination is an essential life skill, whether you are playing a sport or cleaning your room. We'll play handball, basketball, dodgeball, wallball, wiffleball and more! We focus on awareness, visual spatial perception, and quick thinking/acting to help kids improve the simultaneous use of their hands and eyes.
Push the limits of your construction skills with Lego Engineering class. We'll build bridges, towers, tunnels, vehicles, machines, robots and more. Each class has an engineering challenge and a chance to share your creations with the full group. Projects will be done individually, in pairs and small group teams; helping to develop interpersonal skills. Join friends and bring your ideas to life as we collaborate on big group projects such as building a giant maze, an animal safari, or a haunted castle.
Build a coin cell led light. Build lemon batteries and learn about the chemical reactions that create electricity. Want to know the difference between a capacitor and a battery? Want to build with motors, speakers, and circuit boards? We'll safely explore the fundamentals of electronics. We'll open up computers and reassemble them to find out how they work. We'll play with magnets, LEDs, resistors, photovoltaics, arduino and more!

Game theory is the mathematical modeling of strategic interaction among rational (and irrational) agents. Learn some new skills for handling everything from logic puzzles to social interactions.
Learn to write instructions that computers will follow. Move sprites, solve mazes and puzzles with Scratch, Hour of Code, Code Combat, and more. Learn about programming languages, loops, conditionals, variables, data structures, and other fundamentals of programming. Build with Snap Circuits and create your own Rube-Goldberg Machines using dominoes, springs, levers, and other simple machines.

Join us for the Build a Creature Workshop. How many eyes, arms, and legs will your creature have? How do they communicate? Will they have special powers, abilities? Are they sentient? Do they live in groups or are they solitary? What habitat do they live in? We're going to imagine and build our favorite animals, aliens, pokémon, shopkins, monsters and more! We'll sketch out our creatures and build versions of them in Scratch, then we'll use everything from popsicle sticks to legos, snap circuits, and LEDS. If you can dream it up, we will build it!
